Hope for the Battle By Taylor Coleman

When I saw only one person that looked like me in class,

When I heard darker doctors say the MCAT was easy to pass,

When I saw brown models on magazines that I thought would never give them the chance

When I saw black ballerinas teaching little girls how to prance,

When I saw that God was with the people of the Sun,

I knew the battle for my blackness to be respected could be won.
